Digital tracking could’ve helped nab culprits faster, says CM Pramod Sawant
Pernem/Goa – In the wake of a brutal assault on a taxi driver in Pernem, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant has renewed his call for the urgent implementation of app-based taxi services across Goa. Highlighting the incident as a glaring example of the need for digitised transport solutions, the CM said technology could have played a crucial role in tracing the accused swiftly.
Six unknown persons allegedly assaulted a local taxi driver with sharp weapons on Wednesday, leaving him grievously injured with deep wounds to his head, shoulder, and forearm. The assailants are also suspected to have attempted to steal the taxi. An FIR has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
Reacting strongly to the incident, the Chief Minister stated, “Had there been a GPS-enabled app-based system in place, tracking the vehicle and identifying the accused would have been far quicker. We must now prioritise the safety of both tourists and locals by embracing digital taxi services.”
He urged Goa’s tourism and transport stakeholders to support innovations that enhance accountability and ensure public safety. “Goa’s tourism industry must evolve with the times. App-based taxi services are no longer a luxury but a necessity. They ensure passenger safety, build trust, and streamline regulation,” he added.
The Chief Minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to making Goa a smart and safe tourism destination, calling on traditional taxi unions to cooperate with state-backed digital initiatives like the Goa Taxi App.
Sources in the Transport Department confirmed that discussions are already underway to expedite app-based taxi integrations, particularly around high-tourist-traffic zones such as the Pernem coastal belt and Mopa Airport.
Meanwhile, Pernem police continue to gather evidence and are examining CCTV footage from the area to trace the suspects involved in Monday’s attack.
