Baga, July 18: In a significant breakthrough, Calangute Police have busted a fake call centre operating illegally at Sauntawado, Baga, and arrested five individuals involved in an international cyber fraud racket targeting foreign nationals.
The accused—Abhishek Puri (27), Md. Farid (28), SK Amir Alam (38), Guddu Shaw (29), and Ajoygir (19)—all hailing from West Bengal, were apprehended while actively impersonating representatives of reputed computer service companies. They used the “portSIP UC” application to contact unsuspecting foreign victims under the pretext of providing tech support services, thereby gaining remote access to their systems and siphoning off money.
According to police sources, the operation was conducted based on specific intelligence inputs. The accused were caught red-handed during a raid at the premises, with evidence including laptops, mobile phones, and software tools used for communication and fraud.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. Police have initiated a deeper investigation to trace the extent of the fraud and identify other potential victims and collaborators involved in the racket.
Calangute Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to cyber frauds or illegal call centres operating in the region. Authorities are also coordinating with cybercrime experts to unearth similar fraudulent setups operating under the guise of legitimate businesses.
Further investigation is underway.
