Mormugao: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) convened a special meeting to discuss key civic concerns, with major focus on the construction of a new market complex and the contentious demolition issue in New Vaddem.
Addressing the council, MMC Chairperson Girish Borker announced plans to build a new municipal market to upgrade infrastructure and improve vendor facilities. He informed that a consultation meeting will soon be held with existing market vendors to address issues related to outstanding dues before the project officially takes off.
In a significant development, the Council passed a resolution urging the Mormugao Planning and Development Authority (MPDA) and the Public Works Department (PWD) to intervene in the High Court’s demolition orders related to structures in New Vaddem. Borker argued that the affected residential houses were built prior to the road’s construction and should therefore be considered a “special exception.” The Council is seeking reconsideration of the demolition on humanitarian and legal grounds.
Borker also highlighted concerns about the relocation of government offices back to the MMC building, which are currently functioning from alternate locations. Due to space constraints, the matter is expected to be taken up separately with the relevant departments.
The meeting underscored the Council’s commitment to addressing pressing urban challenges while balancing developmental priorities with the concerns of residents.
