Panaji, July 22:
The recently introduced Roll-On Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) ferry service has led to a notable increase in vehicular traffic, with four-wheeler movement rising by 30% and two-wheeler traffic by 20%, according to River Navigation Minister Subhash Phaldessai.
Speaking to reporters, Phaldessai credited the smooth operation of the service for the spike in usage, but warned of attempts by certain individuals to derail the project. “Some people are trying to sabotage a good initiative. They are spreading false information to create confusion among the public,” he alleged.
The Minister revealed that the issue was also raised during the ongoing session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, where concerns and support for the service were both voiced. He maintained that the government remains open to suggestions but will not tolerate deliberate misinformation.
Phaldessai also hinted at a possible fare review. “I will be discussing the fare structure with the Chief Minister and the local MLA. If we find that the service is being misused or unnecessarily opposed, the government will be forced to reconsider its continuation. We will also take inputs from the media and the general public,” he stated.
Mayem MLA Premendra Shet called on people to ignore those attempting to undermine the project and affirmed that all safety and maintenance standards are being upheld. “We won’t be giving any representation to the Minister because we want the Ro-Ro ferries to continue. It’s a benefit to our people,” Shet declared.
The Ro-Ro ferry service, designed to ease road congestion and provide a reliable transport alternative, has drawn both praise and scrutiny since its launch. With the matter now reaching the Assembly floor, the debate surrounding its future is likely to intensify in the coming days.
