Panaji: In a deeply disturbing incident that has cast a shadow over the police force, two police constables attached to departments under the North Goa Superintendent of Police have been booked and placed under suspension for allegedly assaulting and outraging the modesty of a woman outside a pub in Patto, Panaji.
The incident occurred on the night of July 23 at around 9:40 PM, near the entrance of a well-known pub in the Patto area. An FIR (Crime No. 104/25) was registered at Panaji Police Station on July 24, based on a complaint filed by the victim, a Panaji resident.
According to the FIR, the accused – Omkar Jadhav and Mayur Naik – acting with common intention, allegedly inappropriately touched the woman, hurled obscene language, and made sexually explicit and derogatory remarks, including “Mere sath chalogi kya?” and “Kitna paisa legi tu?” The complaint also alleges that one of the accused struck the woman on her forehead with a mobile phone, resulting in a visible injury.
The case has been registered under Sections 74, 79, 118, and 352 read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. The investigation is being spearheaded by LPSI Sapna Gawas of the Panaji Police Station.
A senior police officer confirmed the immediate suspension of both constables upon receipt of the complaint. “Such misconduct is intolerable within a disciplined force. Strict action will follow upon completion of the inquiry,” the officer stated.
In addition, a show cause notice has been issued to a third police personnel who was reportedly present with the accused at the time of the incident. Authorities have assured that strict disciplinary measures will be taken against all those found guilty of misconduct.
The incident has triggered public outrage and drawn condemnation from citizens and civil society groups, many of whom are demanding zero tolerance toward abuse of authority and gender-based violence within the police department.
