Panaji, July 21:
Fatorda MLA and former Minister for Archives and Archaeology, Vijai Sardesai, voiced strong concerns in the Goa Legislative Assembly over the prolonged delay in restoring the historic Chapora Fort. The issue came to the fore during a Legislative Assembly Question (LAQ) raised by Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo.
Sardesai reminded the House that the restoration initiative was launched during his tenure in government, yet remains stalled to this day. In a pointed remark, he said, “She jumped ship in the name of development, yet couldn’t get the order issued,” referring to Delilah Lobo’s switch in party allegiance.
More significantly, Sardesai questioned the continued silence of Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on the matter, urging the government to treat Goa’s heritage with the seriousness it deserves. “Goa’s heritage needs action, not excuses,” he asserted.
In response to the criticism, Chief Minister Sawant assured the House that the long-pending restoration order for Chapora Fort would be released immediately after the ongoing Assembly session.
The Chapora Fort, a major tourist attraction and historical landmark in North Goa, has seen multiple delays in its conservation efforts, drawing flak from heritage activists and local leaders alike.
