Panaji, July 21:
Leader of Opposition (LoP) Yuri Alemao launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Goa government during the opening day of the monsoon session of the State Assembly, accusing it of sweet-talking the public while undermining democracy and the Constitution.
In a powerful statement, Alemao said, “The BJP government has promises of sugar and honey on the lips, but a hidden agenda in the heart — ‘Samvidhan Hatya’ (murder of the Constitution).” He accused the ruling party of suppressing opposition voices, weakening democratic institutions, and running a government full of confusion and inaction.
Highlighting several pressing issues, Alemao pointed to the collapse of law and order, rampant land conversions, rising unemployment, concerns over women’s safety, and a disturbing increase in rape cases involving minors. He remarked that while Goa is grappling with these challenges, the government remains “Susegad” — indifferent and complacent.
“Lies are on the tongue of BJP and eyes on Goa’s land. The promises may sound sweet, but the delivery is rotten,” Alemao said. He took direct aim at Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, describing the state’s governance as “derailed.” “We have a FAT Chief Minister, a WEAK Government, and a kitchen full of confused cooks. The Chief Chef holds over 60% of the portfolios, and yet the delivery has gone for a toss. It is the people who are paying the price,” he asserted.
Alemao also raised concerns over curtailed Assembly sessions, which he said limit the Opposition’s ability to question the government and represent public grievances effectively. “Despite these limitations, we will do our best to hold the government accountable. We hope the Speaker will uphold the dignity and majesty of the Vidhan Sabha,” he added.
The Congress leader’s fiery remarks set the tone for what promises to be a tense and confrontational session, with the Opposition determined to push the government on key issues affecting Goa’s people.
