Panaji, July 9:
Reinforcing its commitment to ensure safe and hygienic food practices in Goa, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted a series of targeted enforcement actions across Bardez on Tuesday. The raids, led by FDA Director Smt. Shweta Desai and her team, were prompted by public complaints and viral social media footage highlighting alarming food safety violations.
In Aldona, Bardez, the FDA carried out a follow-up inspection at a premises operated by M/s Tiffin Masters, previously shut down in Parra for running an unhygienic and unauthorized tiffin supply business. Shockingly, the operator had resumed activities at a new location without obtaining approvals from the FDA or the local body. Inspectors found the premises in unsanitary conditions, and a notice under Section 31 of the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006 was issued. A spot inspection report was also prepared, and the food prepared on-site was voluntarily destroyed in the presence of the Food Business Operator (FBO).
In a separate case, the FDA acted swiftly on a viral video showing a cow leaking fluid over a shawarma stall in Siolim. Upon inspection, the premises were found to be functioning in extremely unhygienic conditions and lacked mandatory FDA approvals. An unlicensed notice was issued, and the outlet was ordered to shut down immediately.
Further inspections in Peddem, Mapusa, revealed two premises involved in unauthorized artificial ripening of mangoes, specifically the Mallika variety. Surveillance teams collected four mango samples due to suspected artificial ripening using banned substances. Both units were found operating without valid licenses and were served unlicensed notices.
The enforcement drive was executed by Senior Food Safety Officer Rajaram Patil and Food Safety Officers Amit Mandrekar, Lenin D’Sa, and Nousin Mulla, under the guidance of Director FDA, Shweta Desai.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has reiterated that FDA inspections will intensify across Goa, ensuring food safety is not compromised. “We are determined to ensure safe and healthy food for all Goans. These actions are not meant to harass but to protect public health,” the minister stated.
