Mapusa, July 16:
In a major step toward mitigating the recurring problem of flooding in Guirim, the Goa government has launched a comprehensive river infrastructure project along the Tar/Moira river. The initiative aims to protect low-lying areas and safeguard residents and farmlands from seasonal waterlogging and flood damage.
The issue was recently highlighted in the Goa Legislative Assembly by Saligao MLA Kedar Naik, prompting immediate government attention. The project spans the stretch of the river from Guirim to the NH bridge at Tar Junction in Mapusa, a flood-prone belt that has faced challenges during monsoons year after year.
As part of the project, a protective wall measuring approximately 1,200 meters is currently being constructed along vulnerable sections of the riverbank. Additionally, flood embankment bunds are being developed using earth and moorum, designed to reinforce the banks and contain river overflow during heavy rainfall.
Residents and local farmers have welcomed the development, stating that the long-awaited project brings hope for safer monsoons and protection of property and crops. MLA Kedar Naik expressed gratitude to the government for its timely intervention and assured continued monitoring of the work until completion.
This strategic flood relief project is expected to significantly reduce the impact of seasonal flooding and provide long-term resilience to the region.
