Panaji, July 18: In a major breakthrough against street crime, the North Goa police have apprehended two members of the notorious Irani gang for their involvement in multiple chain-snatching incidents across the state.
The accused—Abbas Zaidi (34) and Sharif Shaha—both natives of Maharashtra, were intercepted by a patrolling team of the Old Goa Police at Merces. According to officials, the duo has been linked to at least four chain-snatching cases reported from various parts of Goa.
During the operation, the police also seized a two-wheeler used by the accused to execute the crimes. The arrests were made following heightened vigilance in response to recent complaints of rising street thefts, particularly targeting women wearing gold ornaments.
Speaking to the media, police sources confirmed that further investigations are underway to trace additional members of the Irani gang and recover stolen valuables. The accused are currently in custody, and efforts are on to identify their broader network and possible involvement in similar crimes in neighbouring states.
The North Goa police have urged the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities immediately. Authorities have also stepped up patrolling in vulnerable areas to curb such incidents and ensure public safety.
More developments are expected as the investigation progresses.
