Panaji, July 21:
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo raised concerns in the Goa Legislative Assembly over the lack of new international airlines operating from Dabolim Airport, questioning the government’s commitment to ensuring balanced development between the state’s two airports.
Responding to Lobo’s concerns, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant assured the House that Dabolim Airport will continue to function and receive support from the government. He said steps are being taken to attract more airlines to Dabolim and ensure improved connectivity for international travelers.
“There are currently 50–55 flights operating daily from Dabolim and Mopa airports,” Sawant informed the House, while acknowledging the need for more international carriers at Dabolim, which continues to be a key hub for South Goa and surrounding regions.
Sawant also addressed the issue of Air India’s cancellation of its Goa–London Gatwick flight, stating that the matter will be taken up with the Union Civil Aviation Ministry. The Chief Minister further revealed that the government has already slashed airline charges at Dabolim by nearly 50% to attract more operators.
Meanwhile, Mopa Airport, which began operations recently, has seen a surge in activity, with 90–100 daily flights and a revenue generation of ₹65.88 crore, according to the CM.
Lobo’s intervention reflects growing public concern over the shift in focus toward Mopa, and the need to maintain Dabolim’s viability as a key international gateway for Goa.
