The Carambolim Communidade has strongly opposed the proposed amendments aimed at regularizing encroachments on communidade land, calling the move a direct assault on Goa’s traditional land ownership system.
Addressing the media, Carambolim Communidade President and local MLA Venzy Viegas accused the government of bypassing the legal and cultural framework that safeguards communidade rights.
> “The Communidade Code is supreme, and no government can bulldoze over it. This is a ‘Bhumiputra Bill’ that undermines our centuries-old land rights,” Viegas said, warning of long-term repercussions if the bill is passed.
He asserted that the communidade has always been open to regularizing Goan houses and land through lawful procedures, but stressed that the current legislation is both illegal and detrimental to the autonomy of the communidade system.
The unanimous opposition by the Carambolim Communidade adds to the growing chorus of voices challenging the bill, which critics say could set a dangerous precedent for the future of Goa’s land governance.
