In a landmark step toward improving road safety and traffic enforcement, the Goa government has approved the installation of Artificial Intelligence-enabled dashboard surveillance cameras (dashcams) in all government vehicles. The initiative forms part of the newly sanctioned Goa Vehicle Authentication (GoVA) System, cleared by the state cabinet on Wednesday.
The AI-powered dashcams will automatically detect and record visible traffic violations in real time — including dangerous driving, lane cutting, overtaking from the wrong side, and the non-use of seat belts or helmets. The footage will be seamlessly synced to a centralized backend system, which will instantly trigger alerts and generate challans through integrated platforms such as e-Challan, Vahan, and Digilocker.
Officials stated that the GoVA system is designed to strengthen road discipline, increase transparency in government vehicle use, and support smarter enforcement. The move is expected to significantly aid authorities in curbing reckless driving and enhancing public safety across the state.
Speaking after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant said, “This is a revolutionary step towards tech-driven governance and road safety. The GoVA system will not only ensure accountability in government transportation but also play a key role in making our roads safer.”
The Transport Department, in coordination with the Traffic Police and IT infrastructure teams, will oversee the implementation of the system, with pilot deployment expected in the coming months.
The government also plans to explore extending the system to private and commercial fleets in later phases, with a focus on high-risk zones and accident-prone corridors.
