Panaji: In a pioneering move, Goa has become the first state in India to implement the Pricing Policy for Innovative Lifesaving Therapies (PPILT), aimed at making advanced medical treatments more affordable. The policy’s rollout begins with lung cancer therapy, adopting an outcome-linked pricing model to reduce the financial burden on patients while ensuring effective care.
The announcement was made during a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on artificial intelligence in lung cancer detection. The initiative builds upon Goa’s ongoing collaboration with Qure.ai and AstraZeneca, which since 2024 has facilitated the screening of more than 70,000 chest X-rays across 18 government hospitals, leading to the early detection of thousands of cases.
Goa’s Health Minister Vishwajit Rane hailed the policy as a landmark step toward achieving health equity, ensuring that even expensive, cutting-edge therapies remain within reach for patients.
Qure.ai CEO Prashant Warier remarked that the initiative could become a global model for combining AI-powered early detection with accessible, high-quality treatment, potentially saving countless lives.
